The style isn't entirely new. It's been part of color realism and illustrative work for years. But the rise of dedicated anime tattoo specialists has been recent. Artists who started as anime fans and trained their tattoo technique specifically to render manga-style line and color have created a distinct subgenre.

What distinguishes serious anime work from generic color tattoo applied to an anime character: line discipline that mirrors the source material. Manga and anime have specific line weights, specific shading conventions, specific approaches to highlights in hair and eyes.
