Pre-Appointment Routine

The key to a smooth tattoo experience starts well before you sit in the chair. In the days leading up to your appointment, focus on getting good sleep and staying hydrated. Your skin will take less time to heal and the tattoo will show up clearer if your body is well-rested and hydrated. Aim for at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night for three days before your session.

Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs for at least 24 hours before your tattoo. These substances thin your blood, which can cause more bleeding during the tattoo and make the process longer and more painful. Blood thinners like aspirin should also be avoided for at least 48 hours if possible, but check with your doctor if you’re on any regular medications.

Keep your skin moisturized but don’t apply heavy creams or oils on the area to be tattooed on the day of your appointment. Use a fragrance-free lotion daily in the week leading up to your tattoo to keep the skin supple, but stop moisturizing the morning of the tattoo. This helps the stencil stick better and prevents irritation.

If you have any skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, talk to your artist beforehand to see if it’s safe to tattoo that area. Also, avoid sunburn or tanning in the week before your session - sunburned skin is more painful to tattoo and can affect how well your tattoo heals.

What to Do on the Day Of

Eat a solid meal before you go. Having food in your stomach helps keep your blood sugar stable during the tattoo, which can reduce dizziness and fainting. Bring a water bottle and keep sipping throughout the session.

Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area you’re getting tattooed. For example, if it’s on your upper arm, a short-sleeve shirt is best. If it’s on your leg, shorts or loose pants that can be rolled up work well. You don’t want to be tugging at tight clothes or exposing the tattoo unnecessarily right after it’s done.

Bring entertainment if you think you’ll need distraction-some people listen to podcasts or music, others bring a friend for moral support. Just remember that some artists prefer a quiet environment, so ask ahead if you’re unsure.

Arrive on time but not too early. Most shops will have you fill out a consent form and discuss the design again before starting. This is your chance to ask any last questions about the process or aftercare.

Don’t be afraid to speak up during the tattoo if you’re uncomfortable or need a break. The artist wants you to get through it as painlessly as possible. A typical small to medium tattoo session lasts between 1 to 3 hours, so pacing yourself is important.

After the tattoo is finished, your artist will clean and bandage the area. Follow their aftercare instructions exactly - usually this involves gently washing the tattoo with fragrance-free soap, applying a thin layer of ointment or lotion, and avoiding soaking or sun exposure for at least two weeks.

Keep in mind the healing process usually takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on the size and placement of your tattoo. During this time, avoid picking at scabs and keep the tattoo moisturized to prevent fading or infection.

Getting your first tattoo is a big step, but preparing properly can make it a lot less stressful. If you want to find an artist who specializes in the style you want or has experience with first-timers, check out the artist directory at freshlyinkedmag.com to see portfolios and reviews.
