Remembering Stan Lee on his Birthday

Stan Lee was a comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer. He's brilliance and imagination brought to life some of our favorite characters. He showed fans around the world that heroes can come from unexpected places. In the 1970s he challenged the restrictions of the Comics Code Authority and inspired changes in policies. Even after his retirement, he remained a public figure for his company and made cameo appearances in films. To celebrate the life of Stan Lee, today on his birthday we're sharing some of our favorite Marvel tattoos and tattoos of the man himself.

The talented writer also loved to read. As a child, he loved to read books by Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells.

He was inducted into the comic book industry’s Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995.

In 2008, President George W. Bush presented Stan with the American National Medal of the Arts. Stan is the only comic book writer to ever receive the honor.

Stan Lee cared about giving back to the arts community. He created the Stan Lee Foundation in 2010 to focus on literacy and support art programs, as well as promoting diversity, national literacy, and culture.

Stan’s trademark catchphrase, “Excelsior!” means “Ever Upward.”
